On the 11th of May, the Secretary-General attended The Africa Debate in London, held by Invest Africa. There attended Leaders from across the continent to discuss the future of African trade and how the private sector can fit into the African trade environment.

????️ #Peace, #unity and #hope in #Europe is celebrated today 9 May as the #EuropeDay2023. The date marks the anniversary of the historic '#Schuman Declaration' that set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

EBCAM had the pleasure to welcome its members from all over Europe to the premises of its French member CIAN who hosted the 29th General Assembly.
This time, we had also the pleasure to welcome EBCAM's new member, the Finnish Business Council West Africa, which plays a major role in the business activities of the Nordic region for the development of Africa.
The war in Ukraine which monopolises global economic and political affairs, implications of the energy crisis, fight for global climate change, energy transistion and digital transformation were among the topics that were put on the table with valuable contributions EBCAM members, the national associations that represent private sectors all over Europe and contributes to the development of Africa through investments.

The European Business Council for Africa and the Mediterranean (EBCAM) is pleased to announce a new member, the Finnish Business Council West Africa (FBC West Africa).
The Finnish Business Council West Africa - formally registered as an Association in 2011- represents the Finnish private companies operating in West Africa. The organization aims at establishing relations between Finnish companies working in West Africa, promoting their export efforts, opening doors to new African opportunities and strengthening existing economic relations. FBC West Africa is a member of the Global FinnCham Network of trade associations, Chambers of Commerce and guilds that encourage the internationalization of Finnish companies.
UNIDO replies to EBCAM's letter
Having established an important partnership and communicaiton with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), and in the context of our partnership, EBCAM received a positive response to its letter that addressed to the Director General of UNIDO Mr. Gerd Müller.

The European Business Council for Africa (EBCAM) actively participated in the 1st DG TRADE’s Dialogue with the European Private Sector on Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) online on 19 October 2022.
EBCAM supported this initiative as an opportunity to discuss constraints, and needs that European Businesses face when investing in / trading with EPA countries, particularly in Africa.
EBCAM President Etienne Giros stressed out four main axes that the European Union should aim to focus to facilitate private sector’s investment in the African continent:
- Financing the private sector and diminish loan costs, guarantee risks and give funding access to SMEs
- Revision of the initiative on EU Human Rights Due Diligence Legislation for companies when they have to compete new actors in the region who are not subject to these regulations
- Simplification of the EU procedures with less bureaucracy and information campaigns to increase the knowledge of EU companies and effectiveness of projects
- Regulation of the visa issue for African residents who want to visit the EU

The European Business Council for Africa and the Mediterranean (EBCAM) announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS Business Forum).
The OACPS Business Forum - officially launched on 21 January 2022 as one of the five 'Subsidiary and Consultative Organs' foreseen under the Georgetown Agreement - represents private sector organisations from 79 member states to promote dialogue and collaboration between OACPS Governments, regional integration institutions and the private sector at all levels as well as contribute to the formulation and implementation of private sector development policies and promotion knowledge sharing and information dissemination on private sector development issues.

A quick update in on EBCAM in 2022 so far
EBCAM has been very active so far in 2022, being able to attend many events in person, including those of our members, after spending a long time meeting the EBCAM family online. These have presented invaluable opportunities to not only gain insight into the issues of the day in African economies, identifying and discussing, amongst stakeholders, opportunites for investments for the European private sector, but also a great chance to reconnect in-person with valued members of our network throughout Europe and Africa. We are delighted to have had a very active events schedule so far this year and look forward to the upcoming events and forums that this year still has to offer!

The European Business Council for Africa and the Mediterranean (EBCAM) announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Union Business Group Tanzania.
The European Business Group Tanzania was formed in 2014 and is a strategic partner for improving Tanzania’s business climate and promoting trade and investment between Europe and Tanzania. The European Business Group Tanzania is supported by the EU, its Member States and EFTA Diplomatic Missions and is intended to act as a structured association in support of the European private sector operating in the United Republic of Tanzania. This group allows firms to exchange information and experience and carry out advocacy and lobby activities together under one common “European businesses” banner.
