How should the Biden administration approach Africa?
On Friday, December 17th 2021, 10h00 - 11h00 (EST), the Brookings think tank will be hosting an event on how the Biden administration should be approaching Africa.
Africa has not been a top strategic priority for the United States. While successive U.S. administrations have sought to advance health, trade, and energy initiatives, high-level U.S. attention toward the continent has often been limited to concerns about security, extremism, and migration flows. Under the Trump administration, the United States became narrowly preoccupied with China’s influence over a number of African states, while the Biden administration has largely been focused on the civil war in Ethiopia. During a recent visit, however, Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed hope the United States can build stronger relations, recognizing the continent's vast economic potential and many promising trends.

Nobel laureate Esther Duflo, Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will on 13 December deliver the 2021 Kofi Annan Eminent Speakers’ Lecture, organized by the African Development Institute.
The theme of the lecture is Good Economics for Warmer Times: How to Address Our Climate Change Challenges. It will be attended by Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group, and Professor Kevin Urama, Vice President for Economic Governance and Knowledge Management of the Bank Group.

Industrialising Africa: Renewed commitment towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization and Economic Diversification.
The Summit will be held from the 20th to the 24th of November 2021, as part of the Africa Industrialization Day (AID) annual commemorative activities. Given the importance of industrialization and economic transformation in Africa, the Africa Industrialization Day was adopted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity in July 1989, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Africa Industrialization Day provides an opportunity to key stakeholders to reflect on Africa’s industrialization by looking at how the continent can change its current status quo. Since 2018, the Africa Industrialization Day has been commemorated with weeklong events, marking a departure from the one-day tradition, and which affords more time to reflect and accelerate actions towards Africa’s structural transformation, as an enabler to meet the objectives of Agenda 2063, and SDGs, 2030.
