The African Development Bank (AfDB), through its Transition States Coordination Office and its Gabon Country Office, held a workshop in close collaboration with the Government of Gabon to present the findings of a political economy study titled “Towards a Successful Transition and Lasting Stability in Gabon: Challenges and Opportunities.”

Published on 19 March 2025 in Libreville, the study was conducted by the research firm AGORA Consulting, with funding from the AfDB. Several key development partners contributed to the report, including the Islamic Development Bank, the United Nations System in Gabon, and the African Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT). The study offers strategic insights into a potential development model for Gabon following its political transition.

The findings highlight the urgent need for greater economic diversification, particularly through increased engagement of the private sector, to foster structural transformation and social progress. The report also calls for enhanced political and economic governance to support a peaceful post-transition period and ensure inclusive, sustainable development. Key opportunities are identified in high-potential sectors such as ecotourism, digital technology, sustainable agriculture, agro-industry, and fisheries.

Recognising the strategic importance of the study, Alexandre Barro Chambrier, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and Forward Planning—also the AfDB Governor for Gabon—emphasised its role in reimagining Gabon’s economic model, strengthening its institutions, and building a more resilient and equitable society.

“The study provides a roadmap for consolidating the gains of the transition and guiding the interventions of development partners in the post-transition period,” said Nouridine Kane Dia, AfDB Country Manager in Gabon. “The key challenge will be to ensure that these interventions are coordinated, coherent, and responsive to Gabon’s evolving needs.”

Riadh Ben Messaoud, speaking on behalf of the Bank’s Transition States Coordination Office, added: “This study is not just a technical exercise. It also represents the Bank’s commitment to mobilising key partners in support of Gabon and its people at this pivotal moment in the country’s history.”
