Fostering Inclusivity with Circularity in Africa’s post COVID-19 Recovery- 30 September 2020; 12:00 UTC+3 - 09:00 GMT (online event)

The African Development Bank and its partners will host a webinar on the transition to a circular economy as part of Africa’s post COVID-19 recovery on 30 September 2020 at 9 am (GMT).
The session is part of the two-day virtual WCEFonline event (from the 29th to 30 September) of the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF). It will highlight circular economy opportunities to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient development model that bolsters jobs for youth, green innovations and sustainable development in Africa.
The African Development Bank recognizes the strategic role that the circular economy can play in promoting inclusive green growth, in line with its Ten-Year Strategy and the High Five priority objectives.
Through knowledge-sharing and public-private partnerships, the Bank is establishing the Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF), a multi-donor trust fund to support the adoption and diffusion of circular practices in Regional Member Countries.
Led by the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, Finland has joined forces with Canada and the Netherlands to host three high-level events over the next year to address the role of circularity in promoting economic development and advancing the fight against climate change and resource depletion.
Re-Centering Governance in EU-Africa Relations

As European foreign policy pivots south, EU-Africa relations are an important priority of the current German Presidency of the EU Council. While the COVID-19 crisis has forced Germany to change focus, shifting the EU’s long-term partnership with Africa remains a key policy concern. Germany’s presidency of the EU Council provides an opportunity to address structural challenges revealed by the current crisis, and to set the intercontinental partnership on track for a more sustainable and equitable future.
Where do European and African interests meet, and where do they diverge? Can a new partnership advance good governance? What role can the German EU Presidency play in this? And which issues should be prioritized at the EU-Africa Summit, now postponed to 2021?

Appropriate and innovative policies at the national, regional and international levels are needed to harness these opportunities.
With African countries scheduled to start the process for an e-commerce protocol to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by end 2020, African stakeholders urgently need to explore innovative solutions to African digital integration, drawing from their experiences in national policy as well as international and regional trade negotiations.

A new Africa Strategy and an Africa-EU Summit are planned. How important will the civilian component of crisis prevention and peacebuilding in the EU be in the future? What can we learn from crises that were not prevented?

Online Expert Roundtable 16.09.2020 - EU-AU COOPERATION ON THE GREEN TRANSITION: WHAT ROLE FOR COOPERATION ON INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE POLICY?

Preparations for the AU-EU summit offer an opportunity to give AU-EU cooperation on green transitions a new impetus. On the European side, the European Commission has proposed an ambitious agenda to transform the European Union in a carbon-neutral continent by 2050 and to decouple economic growth from resource use. While the Green Deal is first of all a transformative agenda for Europe, it also has important implications for the EU as a global actor and in particular for the EU’s relations with Africa. On the African side, the African Union and African states have launched a number of initiatives to promote a green transition that also allows for poverty reduction and job creation. The AfCFTA shall promote continental economic integration while the Agenda 2063 has ambitious objectives for energy transitions and the AU is currently preparing a new climate strategy. At the same time, the Corona crisis opens fundamental questions about how to move forward with the implementation of the Green Deal.
