The 2020 Athens Democracy Forum (September 30 - October 2) is a free, virtual event that brings together leaders from government, business and the non-profit sector to explore the key issues facing democracy.  Themed "The New Abnormal: Reimagining Democracy,"  the event is hosted and moderated by senior The New York Times journalists in order to provide quality, independent analysis of the critical issues facing democracy

The impressive agenda explores issues including the future of capitalism, geopolitical shifts, transitioning from protests to politics, the use of technology as a force for good, the power of belief, and much more. 

Sessions include:

  • Democracy in a Time of Crisis: The coronavirus pandemic has tested leadership models around the world and has brought unexpected changes. How have various political models gained or lost legitimacy?
  • From Protests to Politics: Activists have been the catalysts for real regime changes around the world. But can protests transition into lasting governmental structures? Or are dissidents by nature ill-suited to governance?
  • Capitalism in a post-Covid World:Can corporations make the enormous changes needed to respond effectively to a rapidly changing world? Or is the capitalist system itself outmoded and in need of an overhaul?
  • Migration and Human Rights:Wars, economic dislocation and climate change have pushed people from their homelands. What has the impact been on social cohesion and human rights, especially for children and youth?
