Presidential, legislative and provincial elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are scheduled to take place on 23 December 2018, following a two-year lapse since the expiration of President Joseph Kabila’s mandate. Given the country’s constitutional crisis, widespread insecurity and humanitarian crisis, the upcoming elections hold high stakes for the people of the DRC. The polls could potentially bring about the country’s first democratic transfer of power, but they also risk further destabilisation if electoral credibility is undermined. Understanding the DRC’s complex political landscape, regional dynamics and root causes of conflict is crucial for domestic and international actors to support a viable election process and future for the DRC.
