The European Business Council for Africa

Date: 30 June 2022, 08:30-16:35 (CEST)

Baden, Switzerland

The annual platform for business between Switzerland and Africa.

This year’s theme is ‘Next generation business in African markets‘. Urbanization, population growth, technology development and climate change are just a few megatrends influencing the way businesses define their global business strategies. Global demographic trends will be dominated by population growth on the African continent. Africa’s population will make up 25% of the world’s population by 2050, an increase from 17% today. Sub-Saharan Africa alone is projected to be a main contributor to global population growth with 52% of added people originating from the region between 2019-2050.

With the average age of the population on the African continent being 18 years, compared to an average of 42 years in Europe, it becomes impossible to divorce these megatrends from the continent’s demographic composition. Projections show that 50% of African populations will be living in cities by 2035 and most of these populations will be digitally savvy young people concerned with: finding employment or being entrepreneurs; improving their quality of life; engaging with global and pan-African networks; and dealing with some of the most severe effects of climate change.

Africa Business Day 2022 will explore how companies and organizations are responding to these megatrends to maximize their impact in the markets where they are active.
