The fast and challenging transformations of the global economy are reshaping the conditions for Africa’s global emergence in the 21st Century. The socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the reshaping of global value chains, insufficient development finance and fast rising food and energy prices call for innovative policies and international partnerships. As the continent was just starting to recover from the crisis and heal the scars from the pandemic, it faces again a deteriorating global economic outlook. That context also challenges African economies’ efforts to reduce their dependence on raw material export, advance productive transformation and increase investment and domestic resource mobilisation. The emerging global disorder is thus shaking the policy discussions on the transformation of African economies and how best to create opportunities for their youth.

The Africa Forum is the annual gathering where OECD officials and African policy makers, private sector, academia and civil society leaders weigh the continent’s approaches to face the present and the challenges that lie ahead. This 21st edition of the AU-OECD International Economic Forum on Africa takes places in the framework of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM), chaired by Italy under the theme “The Future We Want: Better Policies for the Next Generation and a Sustainable Transition”. The Forum is an opportunity for OECD members to engage at high level, yet informally, with Africa’s leaders, movers and shakers on the way forward.
