Africa’s rapidly growing population and demand for energy implies big changes in the future. The African continent will become a major global carbon emitter if the current fossil fuel-dependent trajectory prevails. Europe can support the expansion of renewable energy and sustainable development through investment, knowledge transfer, partnerships and initiatives such as Global Gateway.
Besides, the EU has its own interests in Africa. Increased cooperation not only contributes to climate protection but also promotes economic stability and creates long-term prospects for both regions.
Our panel discussion will analyse and discuss findings from two reports on Africa's climate and energy futures, modelled by the Institute for Security Studies. The reports explore various scenarios that present the impact of Africa’s energy production and demand, the implications of a global carbon tax, and sustainable practices. What are the different future scenarios for Africa with regard to energy and climate? What do these developments mean for Europe and how can the EU-Africa partnership be mutually beneficial? We look forward to discussing these and other questions with you.
