Having secure land tenure, ensuring people's confidence in accessing, controlling and utilizing their land, is crucial for promoting sustainable land management practices. It also plays a key role in building resilience against the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and increased desertification due to higher temperatures.
A well-regulated and secure land tenure system is essential for fostering sustainable development and resilience in the face of environmental challenges. Land data is pivotal in this process, serving as the foundation for institutional reforms, improved policies, and well-informed responses in the context of the climate crisis. Accessible, complete, inclusive, and actionable land data provide evidence for making informed decisions and addressing environmental challenges effectively, ensuring people and their communities are at the centre of land governance.
This session has the overarching goal of increasing awareness regarding the impact of environmental challenges on secure land tenure rights and, reciprocally, how these rights influence land users' ability to adapt and build resilience to the effects of climate change, as well as their potential to benefit from opportunities for adaptation and mitigation. By using diverse sources of land data, this session will demonstrate how data and monitoring processes can serve as a foundation for an evidence-based response to climate change and the role played by secure land tenure. Finally, the session seeks to showcase how these different kinds of land data can be translated into meaningful messages and policy-change recommendations that can hold relevant actors accountable and support governments, enabling them to fulfil both their national and international commitments and aspirations regarding climate change.
